Organization of a press conference on the national hackathon “OpenGovDataHack2023”

Monday morning March 6, 2023, a press conference was held to present the agenda of the national competition “OpenGovDataHack2023”, which will be organized on March 17, 18 and 19, 2023 in Hammamet. It should be mentioned that the organization of this hackathon is part of the implementation of the provisions of government decree no. 3 of 2021 of January 6, 2021 relating to open government data and the 5th commitment of the 4th plan of OGP’s national action on enhancing the public data opening and promoting its reuse.

The implementation of this competition is supervised by the e-Government Unit at the Presidency of the Government in cooperation with the World Bank office in Tunisia and with three ministries (Social Affairs, Health and Education). This hackathon aims to value the open data that is published through the National Open Data Portal, which currently includes more than 2,200 datasets, and to stimulate the development of new reuses of this data with added value for citizens and others users of the aforementioned public structures.

In order to participate in the “OpenGovDataHack2023” by users, developers and specialists in the field of data, especially young people, registration has been opened for participation during the period from January 30 to March 03, 2023 via the Open Government Partnership website in Tunisia: www.ogptunisie.gov.tn.

A total of 545 candidates submitted their applications. Based on specific criteria included in the application form, 195 participants were selected, divided into 33 teams. It should be noted that 70% of the participants are students and 53% of the participants are between 18 and 24 years old.

These teams (11 teams per sector) will choose one of the challenges proposed by the three public structures, or can work on a new idea or proposal related to one of these sectors.
Thus, on Friday March 10, 2023, an information day will be organized in Tunis to further present the approach and the program of this national competition to the selected candidates, in the presence of representatives of the three structures concerned who will explain the proposed challenges.

During the days of March 17-18-19, 2023, the hackathon will be organized in the city of Hammamet, in the presence of the candidates, representatives of the ministries concerned, experts specialized in the field, and all the partners of the Open Data program in Tunisia.

It should be noted that the e-Government Unit at the Presidency of the Government had previously organized, in cooperation with the World Bank, the first edition of this national Hackathon on January 24, 25, 26, 2020, in order to develop solutions based on innovative technologies through the reuse of open public data that specifically concerns several sectors: transport, culture and health insurance. Following this competition, work continued during the year 2021 to concretize some prototypes and projects emanating from the competition by ensuring support for the owners of these projects by the World Bank, and in coordination and cooperation with the public structures involved.
